Through surveys, focus groups, departmental meetings and other conversations some important lessons were learned. Thank you for the discussion and your insights.
While the Wagner community is ablaze with innovative and creative teaching, it’s clear that we need a spark to learn about the myriad of new online tools and approaches, how best to connect them to learning goals, and how to fully embrace the advantages these online technologies can bring to our work.

To begin to meet the needs of our community, we’re happy to announce a celebration of Wagner faculty: Media Literacy in Teaching & Learning, a series of training opportunities, pilot course programs, and faculty support.

With a demonstration grant from Bringing Theory toPractice, research was conducted during the 2010-2012 academic years to examine the relationships among civic engagement, experiential learning, and student well-being (Keyes, 2006). Students and faculty in the First-Year Program completed questionnaires each year about their experiences; analysis of the student data showed that service learning and student well-being were related positively. Students in learning communities that were engaged with service learning (some or all of their off-campus experiences were service or civically engaged) reported higher levels of social, emotional, and psychological well-being than students in learning communities that were engaged primarily in field-based learning or field trips.

In addition, students engaged in service learning had higher levels of what was called “faculty-student-site connection” than students primarily engaged in field trips. “Faculty-student-site connection” was composed of four factors from the faculty surveys:

faculty communication with the site

orientation to experiential learning by faculty

orientation to experiential learning by the site

faculty accompanying students to the site

To illustrate these results and promote the work being done in the Port Richmond neighborhood, brief profiles were displayed on campus and appear here.

The series will be hosted by popular culture scholar and performer Tom Santopietro, who will lead a discussion following the screening of each film. The program is free, and the public is invited.

“Network,” a satirical film about a fictional television network and its struggle with poor ratings, tells the tale of TV news anchor Howard Beale, his on-air descent into madness, and the way corporate interests controlled the news media (and everything else). Released in 1976, the film won screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Other honors for “Network” include:

2000 — Selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry

2002 — Inducted into the Producers Guild of America Hall of Fame

2006 — Voted one of the Top 10 screenplays by the Writers Guild of America, East

2007 — Ranked #64 in the American Film Institute’s Top 100 greatest American films

He also performs in “That’s Life!”, a tribute to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett, accompanied by Carnegie Hall headlining singer/pianist Tony DeSare.

The Barnes & Noble in-store interviewer for celebrity author appearances, Santopietro lectures nationwide on classic films. In addition, he has managed more than 30 Broadway shows over the past 25 years. A graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law, he says that he is “extremely happy not to be practicing law.”

In addition to “Network,” Tom Santopietro will host screenings and discussions of three more “Films on Film” this semester:

March 19, “The Bad and the Beautiful,” directed by Vincente Minelli

April 16, “Ace In The Hole,” directed by Billy Wilder

May 7, “The Player,” directed by Robert Altman

Students and employees were asked to complete a Satisfaction Survey at the start of the 2012 spring semester; 12% of students and 42% of employees did so. Five offices/departments were on both “top 10” lists:

Horrmann Library

Health Services

Postal Center

Copy Center

Admissions

Positive comments about these and other top-rated offices included “very helpful”, “a comfortable place”, “nice people who interact well and do their best to help me”, “great service and fast results”.

The survey also included a question about people’s preferred method of communication, asking respondents to rank the choices of email, phone, text, FaceBook, and Twitter. Both students and employees responded that their preferred method was email, followed by phone. Open-ended comments indicated that email was more business-like, whereas text messages, FaceBook, and Twitter were seen as personal and informal in nature.

The following changes being made on campus have been based in part on the survey results:

Students will receive an email alerting them when a “hold” is placed on their account. Some of the comments on the survey indicated that students found out about a hold only when they went online to register.

A computer is being placed on the first floor of Cunard Hall for students to conduct transactions associated with the Business Office, Registrar’s Office, or Financial Aid.

Improved signage in Cunard Hall, to reduce confusion about which office is where.

Each year the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) asks students at hundreds of colleges and universities to reflect on the time they devote to various learning activities. The topics explored are linked to previous research on student success in college. Results from NSSE can provide prospective students with insights into how they might learn and develop at a given college. The following responses were provided by 240 Wagner students on the 2012 NSSE survey. Wagner students scored significantly better than students at comparison small private colleges in the Northeast on three broad measures: Active and Collaborative Learning, Student-Faculty Interaction, and Enriching Educational Experiences.

Included among the 14 Wagner participants were seven undergraduates — four freshmen, three seniors. The seniors made presentations of their own research:

Joanna Emilio — “Analyzing the effect of Di-n-pentyl phthalate on the development and viability of Drosophila melanogaster” — Dr. Heather Cook, Wagner College research adviser

Corey Gaylets — “Modification of a yeast strain toward the creation of a light-activated elongation factor” — research completed during a summer internship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine under supervision of Dr. Brendan Cormack; Dr. Christopher Corbo, Wagner College research adviser

Felicia Rubertone — “Analyzing the effect of BPA on viability and development of Drosophila melanogaster” — Dr. Heather Cook, Wagner College research adviser

Corey Gaylets won a special award for best student presentation from a four-year institution.
“The kind of research these students are accomplishing is not only award-worthy,” said Wagner College biology professor Donald Stearns, “it is taking our students to exciting places and enhancing the reputation of Wagner College as an institution of higher education. Congratulations to all.”
