Successful television executive and an Emmy award winner

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the winners of the 34th Annual Sports Emmy Awards at a special ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City — and Scott Lewers ’97, a Wagner College business administration graduate, was among the winners! Lewers, senior vice president for programming for the Discovery Channel, was an associate producer of the “Red Bull Stratos: Space Jump” for YouTube, which won the 2013 Sports Emmy award for Outstanding New Approaches Sports Event Coverage. The Red Bull Stratos mission was the famous record-breaking space jump by Felix Baumgartner last October from a capsule suspended at the outer edge of Earth’s atmosphere beneath a weather balloon.

Lewers joined the Discovery Channel in 2012 and leads program strategy for the flagship network, coordinating across all departments to create and conceptualize series, specials, franchises and initiatives for domestic telecast while fully leveraging those for all business opportunities.

Prior to Discovery, Lewers served as Vice President of Strategic Multi-Platform Program Planning & Acquisitions at Oxygen Media/NBCU where he directed strategy, maintaining and executing the overall programming direction for the network across all platforms. Lewers began at Oxygen as Director of Programming, Scheduling and Planning, where he oversaw the program planning and scheduling teams.

Previous to Oxygen, Lewers served as Manager of Programming, Scheduling & Acquisitions at Lifetime Entertainment, where he helped guide strategic program planning and scheduling for all Lifetime Networks, including Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network & Lifetime Real Women. He began at Lifetime as Manager of Programming Research, charged with analysis of audience and focus group studies.

Originally from Houston, TX, Elliot Jacobson ’06  arrived at Wagner College full of big ideas.  Through the experiences had at Wagner, Jacobson was able to narrow down what he wanted to do after graduation.

An arts administration major, Jacobson found Wagner’s Learning Communities a key component to his success.  Learning Communities (LC’s) are clusters of courses that are linked together by a single theme and share a common set of students. The faculty plan their LC courses with overlapping assignments, common readings and joint problems so that courses share common ground.  Jacobson recalls his freshman LC, which combined music and literature, helping to set the stage for what would come throughout his years at Wagner.  The combination of concepts such as music business and music performance helped him develop a deeper understanding for the music industry.

With the help of Wagner’s Career Development office, Jacobson landed internships at Sony Music, Atlantic Records and Universal to name a few.  “It was a really big help to learn while in school, how to work in a professional world.  When I got out of Wagner, I already understood how the real world was working,” noted Jacobson.

While enrolled at Wagner, Jacobson met indie pop singer-songwriter and Staten Island native, Ingrid Michaelson.  The two hit it off, and next thing Jacobson knew, he was playing drums on Michaelson’s first record.  As he tried to balance two lives as a drummer and a career at a music publishing company, Jacobson “took the leap” and turned his career as a drummer into a full time role, playing drums for Michaelson and other artists.

On Saturday, April 13, 2013 members of the Wagner College Inner Circle travelled to Manhattan to see Wagner’s own Renee Marino ’04 and Katie O’Toole ’09 in the Broadway production of Jersey Boys.  After the show Renee and Katie graciously joined the Inner Circle members for a meet and greet at Restaurant Thalia where the group had dinner.

Nusbaum and his team spent 3.5 years in GCT working on design plans, while overseeing the historic $200 million restoration of the iconic terminal. Happening All Day

11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.  Reunion Registration Stop by reunion headquarters to check in, pick up a schedule of reunion activities or ask a question. Also, post a note at the Seahawk Community Reunion Message Board or check for messages from classmates, friends, or faculty members.

11 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Foundation Hall Check-In If you registered to stay in Foundation Hall for the weekend you can conveiniently pick up your room keys, registration packet and have our student volunteers help with your luggage before heading to your Reunion Weekend activites. Parking will be available in the lot adjacent to the building on a first-come-first-served basis.

Friday Afternoon

12 p.m.  Heritage Society Luncheon (By Invitation) Members of the Heritage Society help secure the future and ensure the vitality of Wagner College by including the College in their estate and/or financial plans.

12 p.m.  Lunch (On Your Own) Enjoy lunch with your fellow alumni, friends, and family in the Union Building. See who has arrived on campus and relax while you review the activities for the weekend. ($8.50/ person, pay at the door)

2 – 3 p.m.  “Wagner’s Hidden Jewel; Explore the Planetarium” with Dennis Anderson, Planetarium Director Planetarium, Spiro Hall Dennis Anderson, Wagner’s planetarium director, will give an overview of our new SciDome-HD projection system and give a brief history of how Wagner came to house such a unique space on campus. There will be a full planetarium show on Saturday afternoon.

2:30 & 3:30 p.m.  Campus Tours See and hear about all the changes happening on campus as we take a walking tour of the campus. Please plan to arrive at least five minutes before the scheduled tour time. Note: the 3:30 p.m. tour will be handicap friendly.

Friday Evening

5 – 6 p.m.  Welcome Reception Help officially kick off Reunion Weekend with a reception hosted by President Richard and Carin Guarasci.

6 – 8 p.m.  Class of 1963 and Friends 50th Anniversary Dinner The Golden Seahawks commemorate their 50th anniversary. Buffet dinner with wine service.

6 – 8 p.m.  Seahawk Social Join alumni, friends, and family in the Main Dining Room to catch up on what’s new and exciting. Buffet dinner will be served. For groups, if you would like a table reserved for your group (five or more), please call the Office of Alumni Relations at 718-390-3224.

6 – 11:30 p.m.  Broadway Show: Nice Work if You Can Get it Imperial Theatre, New York, NY It’s the Roaring Twenties, and a cast of outrageous characters gather in New York to celebrate the wedding of a wealthy playboy. But things don’t go as planned when the playboy meets a bubbly and feisty bootlegger who melts his heart. The bus to the show will depart from Howard Avenue, next to the Oval, promptly at 6:15 p.m. Boxed dinner (includes a sandwich, two sides, dessert, and bottle of water) will be served on the bus.

8 – 10 p.m.  Alumni Jazz Night: John Trentacosta and Friends, featuring guest flutist Ali Ryerson Sit back and relax with your friends as we listen to the smooth sounds of jazz with one of the most exciting and versatile Flutists on the scene today. Ali Reyerson has toured the world performing with artists like Dr. Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Maxine Sullivan and Luciano Pavarotti. Light refreshments will be available.

Hear from President Guarasci on the past, present, and most importantly the future of your alma mater.

10 – 11:45 a.m.  Memorial Service with the Alumni Choir Remember and honor the contributions of alumni and friends of the College whom we have lost this past year. Special performance by the Wagner Alumni Choir.

Saturday Afternoon

2:30 – 3:30 p.m.  “Fun with Chemistry: Finding Chemistry Around Us” with Dr. Valeria Stepanova Turn your child(ren) into a scientist for the afternoon! Kids will perform experiments in a modern, college chemistry laboratory which show that usual daily things, e.g. water, air, are not always what they appear to be. We will see how things dissolve in water and other solvents, how gasses can be separated and how differently substances can react to heat. Show your children a glimpse of the fun side of chemistry! All experments will be performed under safe guidance by qualified supervisors. Limited to 20 children, ages 7 and up.

2:30 – 4:30 p.m.  Ice Cream Social Get together with other Wagner alumni, their family and friends to enjoy some delicious treats as we relax, reconnect, and enjoy an afternoon on the Oval.

2:30 – 4:30 p.m.  Third Annual Alumni Kickball Game Join the classes of 2003 and 2008 in a kickball game on the Oval. Open to all alumni of class yrs. 2003-2013. Teams will be chosen on the field.

3:30 – 4:30 p.m.  “A Tour Of the Solar System and Beyond” Planetarium, Spiro Hall Using the planetarium’s new SciDome- HD projection system, we will explore the constellations and learn the starlore of the Summer sky. Our show will continue with an I-MAX-like presentation, “Oasis In Space,” featuring a close up visit to the planets and moons of our solar system.

Saturday Evening

6:30 – 11 p.m.  Cocktail Reception and Dinner Dance with Live Entertainment Dust off your summer finery and reconnect with classmates and friends at our annual Dinner Dance!  Be on the Union Terrace by 6:45 p.m for class decade photos. At 7:30 p.m., we delight our taste buds with scrumptious dinner before you dance the night away to live music on the dance floor.

11 p.m. – 1 a.m.  Young Alumni After Party Black Dog, Staten Island Just because the campus shuts down doesn’t mean that the party has to end! Continue your reunion celebration at a favorite local haunt, Black Dog, on Forest Avenue.

The Inner Circle accounts for over half of all funds raised for Wagner College.

“There is no such thing as a self-made man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and our thoughts, as well as our success.”

Often we lose sight of the individuals who have contributed to who and where we are in our lives. I can’t help but think of my four years at Wagner and the faculty and staff who were the Wagner Experience. Belle Johnson, in Admissions, welcomed me to campus and the Biology and Psychology faculty were the foundation of my education. Dr. Yarn’s sense of humor livened every lecture; while Dr. Ruark-Hazen’s humble nature complemented her brilliance. Dr. Bock’s enthusiasm for her discipline was matched by her compassion for her students. I would be remiss not to mention Dr. Kapostins, the personification of the phrase, “a gentleman and a scholar.”

The above individuals represent just a few of my Wagner influences and are the reasons I support Wagner.

Who are yours? Dr. Kramer, Dr. Raths, Dr. Rohrs, Richard Gaffney, Dr. Kendris, Gary Sullivan? The list goes on.

I encourage you to join me as a member of the Inner Circle by giving a gift of $1,500 or more to honor the faculty who might have “spoken one word

The Wagner College Theatre 2011-12 Production of Urinetown

The Stanley Drama Award was established in 1957 by Mrs. Alma Timolat Stanley in conjunction with the Stanley-Timolat Foundation, which supports aspiring playwrights.  The national competition is administered by the Theatre Department of Wagner College, with past judges including such notables as playwrights Edward Albee and Paul Zindel, actresses Geraldine Page and Kim Stanley, and producer David Susskind.  Past winners, which were chosen for this award before they were professionally produced, have included such groundbreaking works such as Ceremonies in Dark Old Men by Lonne Elder III and Rent by Jonathan Larson.  In 2012, actor Richard Thomas presented the award to Karen L. Lewis for The Perfect Wife.
