Latin@ Month opening event — Tuesday, 6 p.m. — On Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Union Atrium, please join artist Homero Herrera Chez for a projection presentation and interpretation of work from his solo exhibition, “Allegories of a Hidden Landscape.” Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Film screening: ‘Undocumented’ — Sept. 23 — On Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Spiro 2, meet Lucia — in film, and in person — who emigrated from Mexico with her family when she was 3 years old. Through her experience, you will learn what life is like for someone growing up and living in the U.S. undocumented — and gain insight into the process of making a documentary film. Presented by Jorge Torres, Community Job Center Coordinator at Port Richmond’s El Centro del Inmigrante.

Discussion: ‘New York Tlan’ — Sept. 25 — On Thursday, Sept. 25 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Union 201, please join in a discussion entitled “New York Tlan: An Approach to Contemporary Indigenous Groups Living in NYC,” to be led by Marco Castillo, president of Asamblea Popular de Familias Migrantes and director of the Institute for Social and Cultural Practice and Research. The purpose for this presentation is to gain a deeper understanding of cultural diversity in migration and explore the Mexican and Central American indigenous communities living in NYC.

Performance: Grupo Ñuu Davi Folkloric Dance Group — Sept. 26 — On Friday, Sept. 26 from 2 to 3 p.m. on the Union Patio, enjoy a performance by Grupo Ñuu Davi. The group was formed in 2010 under the initiative of Maria Mendoza, who was motivated by her daughter Vanessa’s desire to learn traditional Mexican dance. Composed mainly of children and their parents, Ñuu Davi performs folkloric dance pieces from different Mexican states, including the Jarabe de Tapatio and Cerro de la Silla, which are danced in traditional costumes. Mendoza’s goal is to maintain the roots of traditional Mexican culture alive through dance.

Museo Del Barrio: Around the Block Tour — Sept. 27 — On Saturday, Sept. 27, join Ninah Pretto, coordinator of Wagner’s Center for Intercultural Advancement, on a guided walking tour of El Barrio. Stops include local businesses, murals, community gardens and more. At each location, you will engage in hands-on activities and discussions about the ways in which El Museo and the neighborhood have been shaped by the cultural and social practices of the residents of El Barrio. Spots are limited. Please sign up in CICA Union 204/205. The tour will leave campus at 9:10 a.m. and return at 12:45 p.m.

Film screening: ‘Latinos Beyond Reel’ — Sept. 30 — On Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Spiro 2, enjoy a screening of the documentary film, “Latinos Beyond Reel: Challenging a Media Stereotype,” that explores how Latina/os have been represented in both historic and contemporary mainstream media. At the end of the film, CSI media culture professor Jillian Baez, a scholarly expert in Latina/os and media, will provide commentary and lead a discussion on how to challenge media stereotypes by developing media literacy skills.

‘Ojo de Dios’ (God's eye) — Oct. 3 — On Friday, Oct. 3 from 2 to 5 p.m.in Main Hall 21, join visual artist Lina Montoya for a hands-on opportunity to learn more about indigenous cultures and their customs and traditions by creating a piece of art. Spots are limited, so sign up in advance in CICA Union 204/205.

A Bailar! — Oct. 3 — On Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. in Harbor View Hall’s Gatehouse Lounge, join us for an evening of food, music and dancing in celebration of Latin@ Month.

Maria Aponte Author, Transitions of a Nuyorican Cinderella — Oct. 7 — On Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Coffeehouse, WagCAB will sponsor poetess and spoken word artist Maria Aponte performing excerpts from her book Transitions of a Nuyorican Cinderella. Born and raised in New York City’s El Barrio Maria is a Poet/Performance Artist/ Community Arts Activist/Educator. Maria works in Latino Theatre against racial discrimination and women’s  rights. She has written and performed two one woman shows: Lagrimas de mis Madres an autobiographical play based on the women in her family, and I Will Not be Silenced based on the life of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. Maria has performed her work at various colleges/universities and conferences locally/nationally and Puerto Rico. She has been featured on Bronx Net, News 12 and NBC Latino.
