Dr. Jeffrey Kraus is a political scientist who has served on the Wagner faculty since 1988. Before coming to Wagner, Kraus taught at Kingsborough Community College, Saint Joseph’s College, and Baruch College. Kraus holds a B.A. from Brooklyn College, and M.A., M. Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in political science from the Graduate School of the City University of New York.
In 1988, Kraus joined the Wagner College faculty as an assistant professor. In his early years at the College, he worked on developing internships for Wagner College students locally; in Albany, New York; and in Washington, D.C. He also helped create new majors in public policy and administration and in international relations. Kraus was promoted to associate professor in 1991 and in 1997 became a professor.
Kraus was named special assistant to the provost in 2006. He subsequently served as associate provost (2007–11); senior associate provost (2011–13), vice provost (2013–18) and Provost (2018-21). From January 2014 to August 2014 he was interim provost. From 2011 to 2014 he was the College’s registrar.
Active in the discipline of political science, Kraus has been the president of the New York State Political Science Association (1997–98, 2001–02) and the Northeastern Political Science Association (2000–01) and was a member of the American Political Science Association’s (APSA) Departmental Services Committee (2001–04) and the Executive Council of the APSA’s Political Science Education Section (2007–10). He is currently the Secretary of the APSA Civic Engagement Section. Dr. Kraus’ research interests lie in the areas of health politics and political parties and elections. He has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and reviews, as well as delivered many scholarly papers and presentations.
Kraus has served in government and politics. He was a staff member in the New York City Council and the New York State Senate, served on the Board of the New York State Cultural Education Trust (2006-09) and was a mayoral appointee to the New York City Voter Assistance Commission (2000), serving as its chair from 2001 to 2010. He also has managed and acted as a consultant to a number of political campaigns.
