Financial Aid Counselor

Employment Status:  full-time permanent position

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:       Director of Financial Aid

JOB PURPOSE:  To assist the Director of Financial Aid with administration of various aid programs while maintaining a student-centered environment.  

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:    

Essential Functions: 

  • Meet with parents and students to discuss financial aid options available to them and their best possible alternatives to financing the cost of education at Wagner College and/or Study Abroad
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and policies of federal, state and outside agencies
  • Ensure compliance with Wagner College policies
  • Coordinate the processing of various types of funds including, but not limited to TAP, Alumni Fellowships, Tuition Remission and Graduate Assistantships
  • Federal Verification of student files including the request, collection and correction of student records.
  • Coordinate and complete the annual Athletic Scholarship Renewal process
  • Coordinate and actively participate in Financial Aid packaging including the processing of federal, state, private and institutional funds.
  • Review appeals and Requests for Special Condition Consideration
  • Coordinate financial aid packaging of graduate students
  • Act as liaison with Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to review and update student-athlete financial aid packages with book and lab expenditures as necessary.
  • Responsible for documenting and updating of policies and procedures
  • Meet with parents and students to discuss financial aid options available to them and their best possible alternatives to financing the cost of education at Wagner College and/or Study Abroad
  • Participate in various financial aid functions (i.e. – new student orientation, Campus Visit Days, Admitted Student Days, registration nights)
  • Communicate with parents and students to resolve financial aid and/or billing-related matters
  • Review and creation of documents, forms, publications 

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Student Employment Program functions including collecting the I-9 and W-4 from students and guiding them through the Student Employment process
  • Assist with monitoring of federal fund expenditures
  • Assist with preparation of A-133, CDS, IPEDS, FISAP and other reports preparation
  • Review and approve/deny student Refund requests in accordance with regulations/policies
  • Answer phones and emails involving detailed financial aid and billing-related queries
  • Assist with reconciliation of funds
  • Assist with training of Office of Financial Aid Staff
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Filing
  • Reception Duties

 Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Limited supervision of Graduate Assistants and student assistants

 QUALIFICATIONS          

 Work Experience:         One to two years experience in Title IV administration, preferably in a small, private, liberal arts college setting preferred.

Desired Work Traits:      Working knowledge of the financial aid process and federal regulations; experience with federal verification required; supervisory experience required; ability to work independently and as part of a team; attention to detail required; ability to effectively solve problems, implement projects and multi-task in a fast-paced environment; demonstrated competency in mathematics

Computer Skills:           Proficiency in Microsoft applications, internet and email in a network environment.  Working knowledge of NSLDS, ELM, COD, Clearinghouse, IFAP, EDExpress preferred.; knowledge of Jenzabar CX and html/webpage maintenance helpful.

Communication/Interpersonal Skills:    

Ability to communicate effectively via verbal and written communication; ability to actively listen, manage sensitive and/or difficult situations; ability to multi-task and manage others

 SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS      

  • First Floor in building without elevator or handicap access
  • Travel may be required
  • Evening and weekend hours required for special events. May be required to accommodate student/family schedule.
