MI 109 Microbiology: Plagues, Outbreaks, and Biological Warfare
Do you wonder how people become sick; how one person infects another; which organisms cause illness and how they are controlled? These and other questions will be explored in this course with an introduction to the pathogens that cause diseases. We will study the basic structure and function of bacteria, viruses, and parasites. We will also read about and discuss historical epidemics with an emphasis on how scientists discovered, treated, and halted the spread of these illnesses and how the diseases shaped societies. Present-day epidemics will be examined with some attention given to future epidemic threats.
In addition to classroom lectures and discussions, we will have an opportunity to work in the laboratory learning proper techniques for handling and culturing bacteria.
