Pregnant Women's Mental Health Matters: For Her, and Her Baby
Guest Speaker: Catherine Monk, Ph.D
Dr. Catherine Monk is professor of medical psychology, Department of Psychiatry and OBGYN, at the Women's Program, Columbia University Medical Center, and Research Scientist VI at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Her research brings together the fields of perinatal psychiatry, developmental psychobiology, and neuroscience. She studies the earliest influences on children's developmental trajectories -- those that happen in utero -- and how to intervene early to prevent risk for mental health disorders. She is internationally recognized for her contributions to the research model known as Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Most recently, Dr. Monk has been awarded key roles on a National Institutes of Health project, ECHO (Environmental influences on Children's Health Outcomes). This seven-year, nationwide effort is studying early factors, including prenatal, in children's health outcomes across 50,000 participants. Dr. Monk is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Young Investigator Award.
