Social Justice Dialogue: President Barack Obama’s Legacy

Discuss the legacy of Barack Obama the nation’s first African American president and his impact on the Black community.

INFO ON THE PANELISTS:

CYNTHIA DAVIS is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. Growing up in Montgomery, her family participated in numerous marches seeking equal rights for all mankind with the Rev.s Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy and Jesse Jackson.

Davis has been involved with and is known for her community activism in New York City for over 20 years. She worked as a National Crisis Director for Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network for over 15 years, where she traveled across the country assisting people in crisis situations. Upon moving to Staten Island 6 years ago, the reputation of her activism closely followed. She began to receive numerous phone calls from residents requesting assistance feeling that their civil or human rights were being violated. It was then when she realized that Staten Island was in need of a National Action Network chapter, where she serves as president. She is also executive director of Mt. Sinai Center for Community Enrichment.

EDWARD JOSEY is a native of the Tottenville section of Staten Island, N.Y. Josey worked for over 36 years in the communications field with such companies as N.Y. Telephone Company, AT&T and Lucent Technology, where he challenged company policies concerning the rights of employees. Josey is starting his 21st year as president of the Staten Island branch of the NAACP, where he has also served as the treasurer and vice president. Josey sits on various boards and councils, and in 2014 received the NYS E.T. Reed Achievement Award, the highest honor given by the N.Y. state conference of NAACP branches.
