Violence Against Women within NYC Courts

ACE welcomes Ms. Amira Samuel, attorney at the New York Law Assistance Group, who specializes in domestic violence and family law.

Her talk will focus on challenges faced by survivors in the NYC Courts who are pursuing protective orders. Her talk will feature an overview of domestic violence, the anatomy of a court case and case study examinations.

She works exclusively with poor, near poor and working poor survivors of domestic violence in New York, many of them immigrants. Additionally, Ms. Samuel coordinates Project Eden which caters to Orthodox Jewish survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence in Brooklyn who are navigating the Criminal Court, Civil Court and Rabbinical Court simultaneously. Ms. Samuel provides representation in Family Court and Supreme Court and advocacy in Criminal Court and Rabbinical Court, as well as immigration assistance.
