Faculty Forum: Ethiopian film industry

March 5, 2014 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

On Wednesday, March 5 at 4:30 p.m. in the Knubel Chapel, Kairos House, please join us for a Faculty Forum presentation by Steven Thomas and Stephen Greenwald on “The Question of a Sustainable Business Model for the Ethiopian Film Industry.”

Last December, Stephen Greenwald and Steven Thomas traveled to Ethiopia to meet with filmmakers, university faculty, students, government officials and businessmen to learn about the emergent film industry there. In collaboration with Sandscribe Communications in Ethiopia, we organized a symposium on that subject as well as a workshop on documentary filmmaking led by New York based filmmaker Jennifer Dworkin. This presentation will briefly explain our goals for the trip, highlight some of our experiences, describe what we saw, pose a hypothesis about the future of the film industry there and conclude with open questions about what needs to be done. This presentation is the beginning of a larger research project on the film industry that we have begun in collaboration with people we met on our trip.
