Voices/Voci: Italian Jewish Exiles
Gianna Pontercoboli, Italian-born journalist, U.N. correspondent, and author of "Americordo: The Italian Jewish Exiles in America." Forced to leave by rising persecution, 1,000 Italian Jews came to America to continue their work, from mathematics to music. Pontercoboli retraces their strategies to secure a visa, weave networks of support and confront fascism and anti-fascism in the U.S. Four of those who remained in America won the Nobel prize, while others built enduring bridges between America and Italy.
ACE Guest Speaker, Annette Insdorf
Noted film critic and historian Annette Insdorf will discuss and sign copies of her latest book, CINEMATIC OVERTURES: HOW TO READ OPENING SCENES.
The first few minutes of a film draw the viewer in and introduce us to the movie's narrative and thematic concerns, setting the stage for what's to come. Insdorf's talk will focus on opening sequences where music plays a major role, including clips from films such as APOCALYPSE NOW, TAXI DRIVER, THE CONFORMIST, AGUIRRE THE WRATH OF GOD, and THE HOURGLASS SANATORIUM.
