Gallery reception: Emily Thompson

October 14, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Wagner Union Art Gallery

Please join us at the Wagner College Gallery for a solo exhibition of paintings by Emily Thompson, “Urban Archaeology.” The exhibition will open with an artist’s reception in the gallery on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m., and will run through Saturday, Nov. 12. The gallery is located in the Union Building on the Wagner campus, 631 Howard Ave., Staten Island. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

The work featured in “Urban Archaeology” emphasizes Thompson’s love for the urban and industrial landscape, roadside architecture and vintage signage. Thompson finds beauty in unusual places and says that she “loves anything distressed, rusty or broken down.” Her love for these subjects also conveys a sense of nostalgia, which makes this series of paintings very personal to her.

Part of the fun of her work as an artist is seeking out locations, she says.

“I am always looking for subject matter wherever I go,” Thompson said. “I will drive anywhere for a cool, old sign, an old bowling alley or a vintage diner.”

Thompson was first inspired by a neighborhood in Queens where there are blocks of old auto body shops, which are the subjects of several paintings of the “Urban Archaeology” exhibition.

Thompson attended the acclaimed High School of Art and Design and received her bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Visual Arts, both in Manhattan. She is a nationally recognized, award-winning artist and has exhibited her work in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and California. Thompson was chosen as one of the 50 most memorable artists of 2015 by Artist Portfolio Magazine and was recently featured in June 2017 issue of the Artist’s Magazine. Visit ethompsonstudio.com to see her work.

The Wagner Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m.

About The Show
Witness the birth of a nation as our forefathers struggle to craft the Declaration of Independence. The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. 1776 puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures, determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.
