Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian Museum Visit

September 15, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

During Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrate two gifts to the world—maize and cacao. These two super foods have roots deep in the culture of Mesoamerica. Learn how Otomi paper figures are used to incorporate maize (corn) and cacao (chocolate) into harvest celebrations, then make your own Otomi paper figures to take home. Create your own Mayan codex with Evelyn Orantes (Quiche Maya) and participate in designing and painting a mural with Joaquin Newman (Yaqui/Mexica). Explore depictions of maize and cacao in Mesoamerican art with Carlos Chaclán Solís (Q’eqchi’ Maya), then learn how to make a Huichol yarn painting that features these two foods. Throughout the day enjoy music performances by Marimba Lira Huehueteca. This museum visit is free however space for dinner is limited and base on first come first serve basis so RSVP to intercultural.advancement@wagner.edu.
