On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, Wagner College’s History Department and Staten Island Arts (aka COAHSI) co-sponsored a gallery reception and panel discussion marking the NYC’s 10th Immigrant Heritage Week. The panel, introduced by History Department Chairwoman Lori Weintrob and Staten Island Arts Deputy Director and Folklorist Christopher Mulé, was led by moderator Jose Calderon of the Hispanic Federation and included author Linda Nieves-Powell, photographer Irma Bohorquez-Geisler, immigration activist Cesar Vargas and Wagner College student Anthony Gonzalez. The Staten Island Immigrants Council gave special recognition awards to Ilya Geller, of Midland Beach, and the Stephen Siller Tower to Tunnel Foundation for service to the immigrant community of Staten Island following Hurricane Sandy. The evening concluded with a musical performance by Jose Ocasio.
