A new collection of essays, “Wagner College: Four Histories,” has just been published by Wagner College. The book is a collection of both old and new material. Three of the four main essays are items written by Wagner alums, collected from the college archives:
- Harald Kuehne’s “A Report on the Religious History of Wagner College” (May 1950)
- Walter Schoen’s “The Founding of Wagner College and the Early Years of its Development” (May 1957), and
- The Wagner memoirs of the Rev. Frederic Sutter, ghost-written by Brian Morris, “The Evolution of an Idea” (1968).
The fourth main item in the book is a new composition by Wagner College administrator Lee Manchester, “Founding Faces & Places: The Genesis of Wagner College.” In addition to the “Four Histories” of the title, this 117-page book also contains several appendices, including:
- Profiles of the “direktors” or presidents of the college when it was located in Rochester, N.Y. (through 1918),
- A story on “Student Life on the Rochester Campus,” written in 1968 by Richard Darrow for the Wagner Magazine, and
- Three tables showing enrollment (1883-1954), a complete roster of Wagner CEOs, and a historical chronology (1883-1943).
The book is available only online through the Wagner College storefront at Lulu.com. Readers can download free PDF versions of the book. Paperback and hardcover print editions are for sale at cost plus shipping, with no markup. The four authors of the main essays in “Wagner College: Four Histories” will be discussing their work at a seminar scheduled for Friday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. in the Horrmann Library. The seminar will be moderated by Dr. Lori Weintrob, chair of the History Department at Wagner College. A reception following the seminar will open an exhibition of archival images to be displayed in the library’s Spotlight Gallery. The exhibition, “Founding Faces & Places: Images from the Wagner College Archives,” will be on display through Founders Day, Oct. 15.
