Project Pericles will host a Take Back The Night workshop on Thursday, April 29 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Union 201. Professionals from Staten Island Legal Services will run a workshop for the Wagner College community, “Understanding Dating and Domestic Violence.” Students, faculty and staff are all encouraged to attend.
The goal of the workshop is to help participants understand the dynamics of dating violence, recognize warning signs, understand the importance of safety in their relationships, and know what options are available to help keep them safe.
Family law attorneys Claire McCue and Manar Waheed, the workshop’s facilitators, will spend time discussing emergency orders of protection from family court. They will also explain the new “Open Access to Family Court” law, which allows young adults in a domestic violence situation to obtain an order of protection. Staff members of Safe Horizon and the Seamen’s Society will also attend the workshop to explain their services to students.
The workshop is being offered in observance of the annual “Ten Points of Light” ceremony, sponsored by Take Back The Night. Since 2001, Take Back The Night has been a 501(c)3 publicly funded charity with the mission of ending sexual violence in all forms and lending support to survivors. Each of its 10 locations will light vigil candles simultaneously at 9 p.m. EDT to demonstrate support for survivors of sexual violence, symbolically illuminating the darkness of abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.
Faculty interested in bringing classes are encouraged to do so. To sign up for the workshop, please e-mail Professor Sarah Scott at sarah.scott@wagner.edu.
