Wagner College Gallery will host “You Are Here,” an exhibition of recent oil paintings by Elizabeth Stark, from Monday, Jan. 9 through Saturday, Feb. 4. A reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 4 to 7p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Stark’s abstract oil paintings allude to the historic painted seascape, with its frozen moments of natural drama unfolding on broad, planar expanses. Colorful, expressionistic and bold, the works draw their emotional power from the sense of space they convey. Some works suggest placid, serene spaces stretching out infinitely, while others seem to present disasters — both natural and man-made — whose unsettling aspect is enhanced by the inscrutable nature of the obliquely implied danger.
Stark has been an adjunct art instructor at Wagner College since 2008.She has exhibited work at the University of Virginia, the Zoller Gallery at Penn State University, and the 808 Gallery at Boston University. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
