HURRICANE SANDY UPDATE — MONDAY, 4:05 P.M.
The evacuation of all the remaining students from our residence halls to the Spiro Sports Center came off without a hitch. We’ve done a complete room check of the residence halls, and we’ve confirmed that all the students are out. All four residence halls are now locked down tight.
We have just 59 students bunking in the gym (out of a total resident population of more than 1,400) with President Richard Guarasci, Carin Guarasci and the emergency team staff. There’s plenty of food and water on hand and, though we momentarily lost power, service was restored almost immediately. Students are in good spirits, and we’ve just finished a status meeting with President Guarasci that we will post online shortly.
We’ve shut down the front Public Safety booth because of wind danger. Calls to the booth are being forwarded to our command center in the Sports Center, and we’ve placed a van across the main entrance to campus.
Two news items for members of the Wagner College community riding the storm out at home:
(1) We have delayed the resumption of classes until Thursday to give students ample time to return to Grymes Hill.
(2) Wagner administrative offices will not open until Wednesday.
We want to assure employees that payroll has already been processed. Direct deposit will proceed automatically, and checks will be available on Wednesday for those who take paper checks.
We are aware that many students have had problems registering for spring classes using myWagner. If you have had a problem registering, please visit the Registrar’s Office after you return to campus and our staff will make every effort to resolve your problem. Thank you for your patience as we ride out Hurricane Sandy.
We will continue to update you throughout the storm via email and on our website (wagner.edu) and our Facebook page (facebook.com/wagnercollege). If we lose power for an extended period, we will also lose our email and website access — but we will continue posting updates on our Facebook page. We suggest that you “favorite” our Facebook page now to make it easier to find later.
Our next update will be posted around 9 p.m. Eastern.
