Join an expected 250 young people Feb. 25 for a day dedicated to uplifting, uniting and forging a better understanding among Staten Island’s diverse neighborhoods at the sixth annual “Know Your History” Youth Empowerment Summit at Wagner College.
The free-of-charge event will feature musical and spoken-word performances, speeches and workshops from a roster of local and citywide groups, and plenty opportunities to speak openly about the challenges of urban life in this borough.
“It is always exciting to share resourceful information with the Staten Island youths and their families as we continue in our quest to save and empower inner-city youths struggling to survive with peer pressure and challenges they face from societal and/or family issues,” said organizer Bobby Digi of Island Voice Inc., noting last year’s event drew more than 200 young people.
Co-sponsored by the Wagner College History Department, One NYC One Nation, the Citizens Committee for New York City and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, “Know Your History” will offer workshops on community organizing, leadership and understanding rights and responsibilities.
Panelists from national media organizations will discuss how the media have played a part in portraying black history and heritage.
Nigerian drummer and poet Femi NYC, Ghanaian R&B sensation Kofi Black and reggae artist Junior Reed are among the musical acts lined up. Crafts workshops will be geared toward youngsters.
The event goes from 12 to 5 p.m. in Wagner College’s Spiro Hall Room 2.
Lunch will be provided, gratis, by Against da Grill and Frank’s Pizzeria.
