Transcript of remarks by Laura Barlament, who gave the Transportation Alternatives award to Annemarie Dowling-Castronovo:
I am a member and a Staten Island volunteer activist for Transportation Alternatives, New York City’s leading grassroots advocacy organization for safer streets and increased access for transportation via biking, walking, and public transit. I am also an administrative staff member at Wagner College.
Ever since our friend, Wagner nursing student RJ Tillman, was killed while biking on Howard Avenue in Feb. 2012, I’ve been involved in this cause, and so has Dr. Annemarie Dowling-Castronovo. As one of the co-professors of the First-Year Learning Community Emerging Global Health Concerns, she has encouraged her students to get involved in Transportation Alternatives’ work. Over the past two years, nine students have contributed valuable research to this cause and gained hands-on learning experiences through traffic and speed monitoring projects on the streets of Staten Island, and they have communicated their results in letters to public officials and in public forums.
For her partnership in making New York City’s streets safer for all users and promoting health and environmental sustainability, on behalf of Transportation Alternatives, I would like to present to Dr. Annemarie Dowling-Castronovo the 2013 T.A. Community Partner Award.
