Winter Closing Information

Residence Halls Close
All residence halls close Thursday, December 11th  at 12 noon and will re-open on Sunday, January 18th at 8am. 
 

In order to prepare for Winter Break Closing here's what you need to know: 



Before you leave for winter break:
a. Take home anything valuable or important to you
b. Take anything you might need with you as you will not be allowed back into your room until January 18
c. Move all belongings away from the radiators/heaters
d. Remove all items from the floor or purchase plastic bins for storage (pipes can burst during the break with the cold temperatures)
e. Close and lock all windows; pull the shades closed
f. Unplug all electrical appliances, including your refrigerator
g. RAs will unplug anything that you leave plugged in
h. Give your fridge a chance to de-frost before you leave
i. Remove all perishable/spoilable food from your fridge
j. Remove all trash and recycling; place in the appropriate location
k. Turn off your lights before you leave
l. Take your keys and ID with you; lock the door on your way out
m. Sign checklist on door


Step 1:  Prepare for your Check-Out
  • Remove all personal belongings before you check out (hangers, trashcans, nails, dry-erase boards, etc)
  • Make sure all college-issued furniture is present in the room
  • Put all furniture in its original position
  • Dismantle lofted beds and return lofting kits to the RD office
  • Make sure bed is returned to its original set-up
  • For suites: make sure all college-issued couches and tables are present in the common room area (end tables, coffee tables, etc)
  • Any missing furniture may result in a replacement cost billed to your student account
  • Vacuum your carpet or sweep your floor, the room should be clean when you checkout
  • Empty all desk and dresser drawers
  • Empty all trash into the appropriate containers
  • Discarded furniture and other large items should be left neatly at the loading dock in your building
  • Towers Hall: basement of C Tower
  • Harborview Hall: basement
  • Guild Hall: basement near the elevator
NOTE:
  • Markings left on the walls or floors will result in a damage charges billed to your student account
  • You should participate in one of the checkout options and return your key to avoid any unnecessary charges
 
Step 2:  Choose your Check-Out Option
  • Option #1 Walk-through Check Out (Standard process)
  • Clean entire room and empty your personal belongings from the room prior to contacting a Res Ed Staff member
  • Go to the RA Office located in the lobby area of your building during Check-Out hours
CHECK OUT HOURS:
Monday, December 1nd to Wednesday, December 10th
Harborview & Towers Halls:   8:00am – 8:00pm
Foundation & Guild Halls:   9:00am – 5:00pm
Thursday, December 11th
ALL BUILDINGS:  8am – 12 noon
  • RA will inspect the room according to the Room Condition Report (RCR)
  • After completed, sign the RCR and give the key (and your ID if leaving the College) to the RA
  • Option #2 Express Check Out
  • If you are unable to go through the standard check out process, envelopes are located at the front desks of your building or RA staff will have them available.
  • Follow all instructions on the envelope (including returning key (and your ID if leaving the College))
BUT, KEEP IN MIND
- Express Check out process is for convenience only
- Should be used only if you are unable to have an RA complete your room inspection
- Students will NOT be able to appeal any room charges under this option
- Completed envelopes can be placed at the RD Office door located in the lobby
 
Step 3:  Make sure you have done all required steps
IMPORTANT CHARGE INFO:
  • Improper Check-Outs will be assessed if you:
  • Leave without doing all preparation steps (clean space, take all belongings, etc)
  • Leave without signing the RCR
  • Leave without signing the Express Check out envelope
  • Failure to return your room key (additional lock change fee)
  • Failure to return your ID
  • There is an improper check-out fee of $100


The halls are officially CLOSED during this time. If you need to stay on campus during winter break, please submit a break housing application.

All students wishing to stay during winter break are asked to complete desk shifts to cover the cost of their stay. If you are unable to complete a desk shift you will be responsible for paying $100/night or $250/week.

 

Your RA will be having a Closing Floor Meeting on December 1st with more information.
