After Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc in 2012, SGA President Gregory Balaes ’13, SGA VP of Community Service Kate Schaefer, and SAAC President Judy Betz, came together to establish what became known as Wagner Cares. Its focus is to encourage individuals to work together in their community service projects, with hopes of making a larger impact. Since then, Wagner Cares has become an integral part of the SGA community service division and the Wagner Plan.
Since 2013, Wagner Cares has begun to expand its mission by continuing relief efforts while increasing their presence within the surrounding community. Wagner Cares has partnered with Grid Alternatives, an organization that will install solar panels on Hurricane Sandy affected individuals homes. Wagner Cares serves the community by participating in their annual toy drive at Staten Island University Hospital, New York Cares day, and winter coat drive. Wagner Cares continues to fundraise funds in order to supply Co-Sponsorships, and relief efforts. Wagner Cares continues to serve as a central hub for community service opportunities for clubs and organization on the Wagner College campus. The organization works to oversee the food recovery network, an initiative that recovers food from the dining hall, and donates it to homeless families. In the 2015-2016 school year, Wagner Cares will explore the idea of investing their donated funds in order to sustain the future of the organization. The organization hopes to supply lasting scholarships in the wake of future disasters to students who are affected by natural disasters.
In the 2016-2017 school year, Wagner Cares will focus on providing students & clubs with more diverse community service opportunities by volunteering & providing necessary funds & assistance for organizations & causes in our local community.
