Becoming a WIT

Get WIT the Program!

A Writing Intensive Tutor (WIT) is neither an editor, nor a grammarian, nor a ghost writer. Rather, a WIT is a dynamic, perceptive, and, above all, giving individual with a sincere belief in the power of writing. WITs are granted the privilege of reading other students' writing, and with that privilege comes the opportunity to help those students improve their written and oral communication skills.

By immersing themselves in an environment that celebrates learning (namely, the Writing Center), WITs invariably improve their own writing, reading, critical thinking, revising, and interpersonal skills. WITs likewise gain valuable teaching experience that greatly enhances their résumés, job letters, and grad school applications. Finally, WITs are essential contributors to the First Year Program (FYP), frequently supervising peer revision workshops and writing-oriented activities in the learning community of their choice.

The Qualifications for Serving as a WIT

  • Writing Intensive Tutors (WITs) must be enrolled full-time at Wagner College. Enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student must be maintained throughout the application process, and throughout the term of employment.
  • WITs are expected to hold a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher. Candidates with a lower GPA will be removed automatically from the applicant pool. Good academic standing must be maintained throughout the term of employment.
  • Writing tutors must successfully complete EN280(W) with a grade of B or higher. To promote flexibility, this course's meeting day/time will not be established until the roster has been formed; class meetings will take place on days/times when all of the enrolled students are available. This course can be taken for 1 or 0 units.
  • All hired WITs must obtain a Job Referral form from the Office of Financial Aid and read/sign a Confidentiality form. The WIT position is a commitment for one full semester and re-evaluated at the end of semester for rehire.  Summer employment may also be available, but is not guaranteed.
  • WITs must remain in good disciplinary and financial standing with the College. A WIT candidate’s disciplinary and financial status will be reviewed and considered during the hiring process. Any policy violation during the term of employment may lead to termination from the WIT position.

The fact that students across every major and discipline can come together in the Writing Center and learn from one another means that an effective Writing Center ultimately upholds the ideals that define a broad-based liberal arts education. We seek prospective tutors from every discipline in the belief that the Writing Center should reflect the wide range of disciplines that constitute Wagner's liberal arts curriculum.
