The Wagner College Guild celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2018. The Guild is Wagner’s oldest organization and was formed by faculty wives to help provide support for the divinity students who were away from home pursuing their education. The Guild members provided transportation, sewed buttons and invited students back to their homes for a home cooked meal and a respite from their studies. Today, the Guild’s mission remains in many ways the same as it was over 100 years ago, with its members committed to assisting students in need. This includes The Lila T. Barbes ’40 Wagner College Guild Scholarship which is awarded to two students each year. As well as supporting the Make a Difference Fund, which provides immediate emergency financial assistance to students in need so that they may continue their education without interruption.

The Lila T. Barbes ‘40 Wagner College Guild Scholarship is awarded to two students each year and is named in loving memory of the Guild’s longtime president, Lila T. Barbes ’40, who was an invaluable member of the Wagner community for more than 70 years. Lila and her husband John “Bunny” ’39, who was Wagner’s onetime Alumni Director, ensured that the Guild remained active, vibrant and focused on its mission to help students in need.
