Philip Cartelli
This Wednesday, Nov. 27, will be the world premiere of a new film by Wagner College film professor Philip Cartelli, “Sublunary,” at the Torino Film Festival in Turin, Italy. Read more about this 21-minute film on the festival’s website.
And next Wednesday, Dec. 4, Cartelli’s short film, “Promenade” (2016), will screen at the Athens Ethnographic Film Festival in Greece in a featured program celebrating one work from each of the festival’s 10 years of existence. Philip Cartelli earned his Ph.D. in media anthropology, with a secondary emphasis in critical media practice. from Harvard University, where he was a member of the Sensory Ethnography Lab. He also holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Paris’s School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences.
Cartelli’s film and video works have been exhibited at the Festival del film Locarno, Edinburgh International Film Festival, FIDMarseille, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s non-fiction showcase, “Art of the Real,” among others. Since 2013, he has worked as part of the duo Nusquam Productions with Mariangela Ciccarello. In 2017, Nusquam Productions were featured artists at the Syros International Film Festival.
Cartelli has received fellowships and residency grants from the Fulbright Institute for International Education, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto, Fondazione Zegna, the Camargo Foundation, Roberto Cimetta Fund, the Valletta 2018 Foundation, and the Film Study Center at Harvard University, among others.
Philip Cartelli joined the Wagner College community in 2017. In addition to teaching film, he is co-director of Wagner’s Film and Media Studies program and chair of the college’s Department of Visual Arts.
