Professor Arant Discusses Flannery O’Connor on Anthony Burgess Foundation Podcast

Alison Arant, Wagner College Associate Professor of English, is the featured guest on the February 2, 2022 episode of The International Anthony Burgess Foundation Podcast.

Professor Arant was invited to talk about Flannery O’Connor’s 1952 novel Wise Blood, which Burgess included on his 1984 list of Ninety-Nine Novels: The Best in English since 1939 — A Personal Choice. The list of novels, as the Burgess Foundation characterizes it, “is typically idiosyncratic, and shows the breadth of Burgess's interest in fiction.”

In this episode, they discuss Wise Blood as a novel concerned with religious obsession, one that Arant hopes can prompt readers to sit with its tensions, even amid various temptations to resolve the discomfort that O’Connor’s fiction can generate.
