On Nov. 10, 2022, the 7th Annual Egon J. Salmon and Family Commemoration of Kristallnacht and the St. Louis was held at Wagner College. Two Second Generation (2G) speakers shared their reflections on their parents’ and grandparents’ strategies to escape Nazi Germany and their compelling messages to the next generation. Susan Slater and Joan Loeb spoke about their mothers who were on the St. Louis transatlantic refugee ship. In addition, four women who were on the St. Louis in 1939 joined on zoom and spoke: Eva Wiener, Sonya Geismar, Judith Steel and Edith Salmon, sister of Henry Salmon. The event also featured a candle lighting ceremony, and musical performance by Jaylen Grey '24, Molly Nemirow '25 and other members of the Wagner College Choir, directed by Thomas Juneau, as well as a moving tribute to the life lessons of Egon J. Salmon (1924-2022) by two of his grandchildren Matthew Salmon and Scott Salmon.
