Dr. Jose Luis Diaz Jr. is a Clinical Professor for the Education Department and serves as Director of Bands for Music Department where his responsibilities include directing the College Band and Jazz Ensemble and overseeing the instrumental lessons program and other instrumental ensemble offerings. Jose Luis currently advises the State and Nationally Accredited Music Education PreK-12 Initial Certification program which successfully launched in 2021. Before this appointment, in 2013, he relaunched the Wagner College Seahawk Athletic Bands, which he also currently directs.
When not at Wagner College, Jose Luis directs the St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School orchestra, performs as a multi-instrumentalist with various New York City jazz ensembles, and performs as an accompanist at local churches. Jose Luis has film performance and/or composition credits for Lionsgate, Netflix, Marvel/Sony, NBC Universal, and New Line Cinema and has conducted in various national and international performance venues. Jose Luis is a graduate of the College of Staten Island (CUNY), where he earned a B.S. in Music. He earned a M.S. in Educational Administration from St. John’s University and an M.A. Ed. in Higher Education, Organizational Leadership from Wagner College. He earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas. His research interests includes themes of access and equity in the music education experience.
