Faculty diversity & internationalization awards
This year’s adjunct faculty Diversity and Internationalization Action Council award for diversity and inclusion is awarded to Professor Rebecca Kelly-Golfman. One of her nominators wrote:
During this class I realized you can say/explain how you truly feel without anyone judging you, and this is the true meaning of freedom of speech. Being able to say what you believe, without covering, is the ideological meaning of our First Amendment, and this is what I enjoy most about our class sessions. We spoke on racism, feminism, race privileges, etc. I gained an understanding of how other races view themselves and how they interpret unfair treatment.
Prof. Golfman teaches a course, “Race, Arts, and Activism,” where she challenges students to openly discuss and unpack racial privilege and oppression and prepare them for how to dismantle it in their own lives and communities after graduation.
This year’s faculty Diversity and Internationalization Action Council award for diversity and inclusion is awarded to Dr. Amy Eshleman. Nominated by several of her colleagues, a few of her nominators wrote:
Dr. Eshleman has co-authored two important books that introduce students to complex and nuanced thinking about diversity: “Seeing White: An Introduction to White Privilege and Race,” and “Seeing Straight: An Introduction to Gender and Sexual Privilege.” As evidenced by her books, Dr. Eshleman has worked tirelessly to become a nationally recognized expert on diversity, and her books are used in college classrooms around the country.
Her scholarship is focused on the study of the expression of prejudice, and she is one of the experts on campus when it comes to diversity issues. Faculty and staff often turn to her when an expert voice is needed. In addition to this amazing scholarship, she routinely mentors students and serves as a standard bearer for the entire community. She was on campus until 11 p.m last night moderating the SGA and BSU’s Annual Race Summit.
This year’s adjunct faculty Diversity and Internationalization Action Council award for internationalization is awarded to Prof. Claire Regan. Nominated by a few members of our community, one of her nominators wrote:
Claire Regan has consistently represented, enhanced and promoted internationalization, both on and off campus, as the adviser for the Wagnerian, which especially promotes the international student community on campus, education abroad opportunities, and social justice programming related to international topics.
In her capacity as a mentor for Mandela Washington Fellows (YALI) program participants, Claire has not only introduced young African Leaders to the Staten Island community, sharing community events and culture throughout each summer since Wagner’s first cohort, but she has introduced Staten Islanders yearly to YALI and Wagner’s program through her professional and personal affiliation with the Staten Island Advance, allowing internationalization efforts a broad reach both on and off campus.
This year’s faculty Diversity and Internationalization Action Council award for internationalization is awarded to Dr. Bernadette Ludwig. Nominated by several members of our community, including students, one of her nominators wrote:
Her work with Napela and the women of Staten Island’s Liberian community has opened up a new world for me. I’ve lived on Staten Island all my life, and all I ever knew about Park Hill was that it’s a “bad” neighborhood. Dr. Ludwig has shown me that there are people there. and they are trying to build and save their community. Through her I got the opportunity to help an immigrant mother of three learn some written English. I also got to learn about this woman’s life, her culture, and I was so proud to know someone with the deck stacked against them trying to make it and run a small business. Dr. Ludwig is an advocate for people of every gender, race, religion and nationality. By bringing her students to this community, Dr. Ludwig is able to change their apathetic views of refugees and immigrants to one that is much more empathetic. I could not possibly be any more confident in my nomination of Dr. Bernadette Ludwig for the Diversity and Internationalization Action Council Award. I truly believe there is no other faculty or staff member who is more deserving of a title such as this one.
