David BenatarPlease join us on Monday, January 28 at 4:15 pm in Spiro 4 for a presentation by philosopher David Benatar, author of “The Second Sexism: Discrimination against Men and Boys,” published last year by Wiley-Blackwell. This program, part of the Academic and Cultural Enrichment Series, is free and open to the public. Students enrolled in gender studies, sociology, psychology and philosophy are especially encouraged to attend.

Does sexism against men exist? What does it looks like? And why do we need to take it seriously? These are the questions Benatar addresses in “The Second Sexism,” which draws attention to the discrimination against men and boys, where it exists, how it works and what it looks like, and responds to those who would deny that it exists. Challenging conventional ways of thinking, the book examines controversial issues like sex-based affirmative action, gender roles and charges of anti-feminism. Benatar offers an academically rigorous argument in an accessible style, including the careful use of empirical data, and he includes examples and engages in a discussion of how sex discrimination against men and boys also undermines the cause for female equality.

David Benatar is a philosophy professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is also the author of “Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence,” published in 2006 by Oxford University Press.
