Book Signing, Margarita Sanchez

April 6, 2017 @ 4:15 pm - 6:00 pm
Wagner Union Atrium

Join Wagner College modern languages professor Margarita María Sánchez González to celebrate the publication of her latest book, “Ser Inmune Desde Adentro: SIDA, escritura y resistencia en las Américas (Being Immune from Within: AIDS, Writings and Resistance in the Americas),” released last year in Madrid by Editorial Pliegos. Sánchez concentrates on the representation of AIDS in Latin American Literature. With an interdisciplinary scope — including psychoanalysis, literary theory and cultural criticism — her analysis contributes to counterbalancing the absence of criticism and analysis on the representation of AIDS in Latin America. “Ser Inmune Desde Adentro” demonstrates the potential of artistic expression to reframe intellectual reflections on social and personal concerns. According to Sánchez, “This project represents my commitment to scholarly analysis and research as well as my willingness to create a space where the voiceless may be heard. The AIDS crisis changed the way humans relate. While political and religious discourses reacted absurdly, blaming the victims, art became the only alternative to combat these manifestations. The chronicles, the autobiography, the novels and the testimonies examined in this book generate an alternative space, a possibility of transcending the physical and social suffering.”
