Anthropology professor Joshua Mullenite will be presenting a paper entitled, “Not Only a Right to Survival: Responses to the Plantation as Responses to the Plantationocene.” Dr. Mullenite’s presentation will consider the increasing calls for thinking through the “plantationocene,” the idea that current global environmental crises are not the result of undifferentiated human activity but rather the specific governing logic of the colonial plantation. As part of his ongoing research on the historical environmental anthropology of the Caribbean, he intervenes in these calls to suggest that, if it is a plantation logic that poses a human-existential threat, then solutions may be found in the past social-environmental practices that historically emerged in response to that logic.
