Gallery reception: Jeremy Day’s ‘Drawings’

January 28, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Wagner Union Art Gallery

On Saturday, Jan. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m., the Wagner College Gallery will host an opening reception for “Drawings,” an exhibition of work by Jeremy Day. The exhibition will be on display from Monday, Jan. 23 until Friday, March 24. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

Jeremy Day’s “Drawings” is a selection of recent work based on three themes: Staten Island, Governors Island and the nude.

Day uses traditional drawing methods to represent scenes around New York City. By exploring various sites of historic and aesthetic importance, he creates a simplified and often bleak vision of the environment, from run-down Victorian buildings on the waterfront in St. George to a twisting tree at Snug Harbor. Images of Governors Island, the site of a decommissioned Coast Guard base, are loosely handled. The nudes are a tentative connection to humanity, simple forms shown in dim lighting and cropped formats.

Jeremy Day is currently a student of Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students League of New York. Born in Minnesota in 1976, Day is a veteran of the war in Iraq. He was a recipient of the Nessa Cohen Grant in 2016.

Wagner College Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m. The Wagner College Gallery is located in the Union Building at Wagner College, 631 Howard Ave., Grymes Hill, Staten Island, New York. For more information, phone the Wagner College Art Department at 718-390-3192, or email gallery director Bill Murphy at bmurphy@wagner.edu.
