Gallery reception: Willie Chu

September 8, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Wagner Union Art Gallery

Please join us at the Wagner College Gallery for “Staten Island Artists,” an exhibition of portraits by photographer Willie Chu, on display from Tuesday, Sept. 3 until Friday, Sept. 27.

A gallery reception will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The gallery is located in the Union Building on the Wagner College campus at 631 Howard Ave., Staten Island.

The Wagner College Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m.

Willie Chu is a native New Yorker who has lived and worked on Staten Island since 1968.

His new show, “Staten Island Artists,” displays — in both realistic and symbolic ways — elements of the life and work of several local artists with whom Chu has worked.

“It’s really been about that community … my friends … people I’ve been acquainted with, and getting to know them,” Chu explained to Christina Curcuru for her Industry magazine article about an earlier exhibition of portraits on a similar theme. “It’s a way to share with the public these artists in their intimate spaces, their working environments.”

Chu’s previous solo exhibition in the Wagner College Gallery, “Storefront Houses of Worship,” was displayed in 2009.

Chu’s interest in photography dates back to when he was just a kid in junior high. His father gave him his very first camera, an old Minolta Autocord. It was love at first sight.

“When I picked up that camera,” he says, “I knew that was it!”

Chu is a graduate of New York City’s High School of Art and Design and the School of Visual Arts, where he earned a BFA in photography in 1977.

His documentary film, “Portraits of Leadership: African American Entrepreneurs on Staten Island,” was a commissioned exhibition at the Staten Island Museum in 2011.

As a member of Staten Island’s Creative Photographers’ Guild for the last 10 years, he continues to show his work regularly at the CPG Gallery.

In June 2019, Chu sold a print of his photograph, “On The Verge,” at the National Arts Club’s Roundtable Exhibition, where he was a featured guest artist.
