Witches of Scotland

March 8, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Main Hall 20, Staten Island, 10301

March 8 is International Women’s Day. To observe this day, two Wagner College classes — TH291 (Witches on the Western Stage) and EN425 (English Senior Seminar) — invite you to a special program, “Remembering the Accused Witches of Scotland: A Movement to Exonerate and Commemorate.” The event is part of a growing political movement seeking justice for those accused, tried and executed under Scotland’s Witchcraft Act of 1563, until its repeal in 1736. For centuries, their names and lives were erased; at this event, we will bring some of those names back to life. We will have petitions as well as tributes to some of the more than 3,000 people who died under the Scottish Witchcraft Act — five to 10 times more deaths, per capita, than from witchcraft executions on the European continent, with the majority being women. We will share what we are learning about the cultural, economic and political forces that led to nearly two centuries of Scottish witch trials.
