CANCELLED HLC Lecture: Kermit Roosevelt III

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED IN THE AFTERMATH OF WEDNESDAY'S SNOWSTORM

On March 22nd, in Spiro 2 at 5 PM the Carey Institute will present a talk with Professor Kermit Roosevelt III.

Professor Roosevelt, a Constitutional law scholar and author, will discuss some of the Supreme Court cases that will be decided during this term of the Court, including: The Gerrymander cases on limits to the power of States to redraw Congressional district lines, a decision that could change the future of politics in the U.S.; the Masterpiece Bakery case on the right to deny services to gay persons on the basis of a vendor’s religious beliefs; the right of labor unions to collect dues from non-members, a case that could destroy the political power of the public union; the right of government to seize and search cellphone records, and more. Professor Roosevelt will analyze and explain the cases and offer his thoughts on the likely outcomes. He will also address the theory of originalism as a standard for adjudication.

Kermit Roosevelt III, a constitutional law scholar, is Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. A graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, Professor Roosevelt clerked with U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter. His published books include: ”The Myths of Judicial Activism: Making Sense of Supreme Court Decisions”, and two novels. Complimentary copies of his latest novel “Allegiance” will be available to attendees.

Film Screening: Professor Marston And The Wonder Woman

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women is a 2017 American biographical drama film about American psychologist William Moulton Marston, who created the fictional character Wonder Woman.

Following the screening will be a conversation lead by Maggie Cross Director of Co-Curricular Programs. Refreshments will be provided.
