At the end of the American Revolution in 1783, loyalists – the losers of the war – faced an agonizing decision: flee across the ocean to new and often unknown territories, or attempt to stay in the states and submit to the rule of people who had been their enemies for seven years of civil war. This presentation analyzes the constellation of push and pull factors that informed former Tories’ choices at this critical moment, including personal safety, threat of persecution, family connections, hope of restored property, and more.
