Gallery reception: Steve Szoke

February 10, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Wagner Union Art Gallery

Please join us at the Wagner College Gallery for “Drypoint: 20 Years,” a solo exhibition of 20 intaglio prints made since 1999 by Staten Island-based artist Steve Szoke, on display from Tuesday, Jan. 22 to Friday, Feb. 22.

A gallery reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The gallery is located in the Union Building on the Wagner College campus at 631 Howard Ave., Staten Island.

The Wagner College Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m.

Drypoint is a method of intaglio printmaking, similar to etching. Artists incise lines on a zinc or copper plate with a sharp needle, causing a raised burr which will hold ink when printed. The primary difference between drypoint printing and etching is a drypoint does not rely on acid to etch the line, but only the pressure of the drypoint needle. Prints can be made from the finished plate in limited editions. Szoke uses the dark qualities of the drypoint medium to create imaginary scenes.

Szoke is a graduate of the College of Staten Island, where in 2009 he received a bachelor’s degree in art. At CSI, he studied primarily under Faustino Quintanilla.
