When Women Ruled the World
Kara Cooney, Professor of Egyptology at UCLA and Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, entitled âWhen Women Ruled the World.â
A womanâs power in the ancient world (and perhaps even today) was always compromised from the outset, and this lecture will address the root causes of this social inequality. Given this social reality in the ancient world, how then did women negotiate their limited leadership roles? Were they able to rule âbehind the throneâ so to speak? How are we to find a womanâs power when it was so habitually cloaked by a manâs dominance? This lecture will address those questions and ask how much of this ancient reality still touches us today.
Lecture will be followed by a reception in Foundation Hall atrium and small exhibit in Horrmann Library featuring the The Archaeology Society of Staten Island archival collection and library gift.
