Debate for Democracy: On the Road

December 2, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Foundation Hall Manzulli Board Room

This semester the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement will be partnering with Project Pericles to provide Wagner College students with engaging experiences that seek to boost overall campus engagement.

Debating for Democracy empowers participants to advance issues they are passionate about. Advocates and communicators often need to tell new stories about social issues in order to build public support. A strategic approach to framing allows communicators to build support by changing the conversation about social issues. Framing is a unique approach to communicating, and participants learn how how to use explanatory language in new ways, how to apply the tools of social science to understand what they are up against when communicating with the public, and how to present solutions to important social concerns including education reform, immigration reform, and climate change, in a way that the public can understand.

This year, workshops explore both the theory and practice of framing so that attendees leave with the knowledge, skills, and techniques needed to construct persuasive messages about their issues. All attendees have multiple opportunities to apply new skills. Participants learn to recognize problematic and optimal framing strategies, practice constructing messages, and explore the potential of frame analysis in building coalitions. Skills from the workshop are readily transferable and workshop attendees learn techniques that can be applied to a wide variety of pressing economic, political, and social problems.
