On Saturday, March 31, 2012, New York 1 aired a preview story on the “Hoodie Vigil” planned for the following Monday to draw attention to the Feb. 26 killing of Trayvon Martin. Martin was shot by a Neighborhood Watch captain who said the African-American teenager “looked suspicious.” Martin was walking home from the store, wearing a hoodie and carrying a packet of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea. Zimmerman has not been charged in the killing. Organizers of Monday’s vigil are asking everyone on campus to wear hoodies and carry Skittles throughout the day as a silent witness.
