College and Elementary Students Collaborate on Art Project

Elementary school students got a chance to “spread their wings” at a local college on Friday.

More than 170 kids from PS 20 visited Wagner College to participate in an art project.

Third and fourth graders worked with a local artist to install “butterfly art”, now visible outside of the school library.

College freshmen from Wagner helped the younger students create a 3-D mural by tying paper butterflies to netting.

“We taught them, they taught us things, and now they have this permanent piece of art here at Wagner College,” said Wagner College Freshman Richard Spinosa.

“My favorite part was when they took us over here where the butterflies are to show us what they look like and how we created them,” said Miles Mangin, a 3rd Grader at P.S. 20.

“I’m excited that the Wagner students get a chance to know the kids in the area where they go to school,” said the project’s organizer, Sarah Scott.

Wagner students take a course called “Learning Community 4” during their freshman year.

A goal of the course is for students to work with the community.
