On Monday, Wagner College physician assistant student Sara Naeem was told that she had been elected as a student representative to the American Association of Physician Assistants’ House of Delegates scheduled to attend the HOD annual meeting next May.
“I am excited to start my professional journey as an AAPA student delegate,” Naeem said. “I am honored to represent both Wagner College and P.A. students from over 254 programs within the organization.”
Naeem, a Staten Island native who graduated from Susan E. Wagner High School in 2015, earned a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in May 2019.
“As a Pakistani-American woman of color who is also a first-generation college graduate, I never thought that I would have made it this far in my academic career,” Naeem said. “As a child of immigrants, I have always been committed to being socially conscious about issues that marginalized communities encounter. For that reason, I chose to become a P.A. so that I could promote health and wellness within disenfranchised communities and be an advocate for those who may not have a voice.
“I chose Wagner’s P.A. program specifically because I enjoyed how active its P.A. students were within our community. From our unique medical mission trips to countries like Peru, to serving as health educators in high schools during clinical rotations, I felt inspired by how much we could impact those around us, even as students.”
Dr. Tracy Jackson, director of Wagner’s P.A. program, sent a congratulatory note to Naeem.
“I am truly excited about your leadership position in the AAPA as student delegate for the HOD. Your selection is a major accomplishment,” Jackson said. “Your dedication, enthusiasm and knowledge has provided you the opportunity to give a voice to the unique perspectives of students and further your leadership development. As AAPA student delegate for the House of Delegates, you will have the chance to represent P.A. students from over 254 programs. I am confident you will be an exceptional representative for your student colleagues and the Wagner P.A. program.”
Naeem expects to complete her physician assistant studies at Wagner College in May 2022.
