Lindsay A. Sabatino, associate professor of English and director of the writing center at Wagner College, was invited to give the keynote address at the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Writing Center Association Conference at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Sabatino delivered the address, “Transforming Practices: Writing Centers on the Edge of Now,” with co-presenter Brian Fallon, professor and director of the Writing & Speaking Studio at SUNY’s Fashion Institute of Technology, on April 2. They talked about how “writing centers have and will always be sites for advocacy,” emphasizing the importance of the writing center’s role in building curriculum for multimodality and accessibility.
Sabatino’s research aims to advance the writing-center field to include digital and multimodal composing. In 2019, Sabatino and Fallon co-edited a collection, “Multimodal Composing: Strategies for Twenty-First-Century Writing Consultations,” published by Utah State University Press.
Sabatino’s more recent publications have addressed a variety of interrelated topics, including the space of the writing center, the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations and the utility of game studies for writing pedagogy. Sabatino has a forthcoming book chapter, “Leveling Up with Emergent Tutoring: Exploring the Ludus and Paidia of Writing, Tutoring, and Augmented Reality,” co-authored with Brenta Blevins, assistant professor of writing studies and digital studies at the University of Mary Washington. The piece will appear in the collection, “Unlimited Players: The Intersections of Writing Center and Game Studies,” edited by Holly Ryan and Stephanie Vie.
Since coming to Wagner College in 2017, Lindsay Sabatino has created a new course for Wagner students on multimodal composing, digital rhetoric and podcasting. In her role as director of the Wagner College Writing Center, she has expanded the types of projects the center supports to include not only writing assignments but slide presentations, posters and podcasts.
