Headshot of Kate Thomas in a graphic in green and gold that reads,

After coming to Wagner from Bucharest, Romania, Denisa-Catalina Stan ’24 says she has fallen in love with New York.

Stan is double majoring in computer science and finance with a minor in math.  During her undergraduate career, she worked in the campus IT department, served as a peer tutor and a library assistant and was a Student Government Association freshman senator. She also established Wagner’s Computer Science and Math Club during her freshman year.

Stan was the recipient of the Trustees’ Scholarship, which is awarded to one international student per year, and received the Kurt Goedel Award for Excellence in Mathematics.

    Q&A with Denisa-Catalina

What do you have planned after graduation?

Following the successful completion of two enriching internships at Microsoft in the past two summers, I am grateful to have received a compelling full-time offer as a product manager. Microsoft internships have an acceptance rate of about 3%. I am delighted to have been a part of that 3%. While Microsoft's headquarters reside in Redmond, Washington, I have chosen to establish my permanent home base in the dynamic metropolis of New York City. After spending four memorable years on Staten Island, where encounters with turkeys, deer, and squirrels were just part of the everyday charm, I'm excited for the bustling energy of Manhattan.

What has been your most memorable Wagner moment?

Arriving on campus in August 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, remains one of my most unforgettable moments at Wagner College. Initially nervous about embarking on this new journey, I was quickly embraced by the welcoming atmosphere. This reassured me that Wagner would be the place where my life would undergo a remarkable and positive transformation.

What was your favorite class at Wagner?

Intermediate Microeconomics with Giacomo Di Pasquale, Ph.D.. Di Pasquale has a knack for igniting curiosity and infusing the classroom with fun. Our cozy group of around 15 students made each session feel like a vibrant exchange of ideas, where we eagerly delved into discussions on current business events, shared jokes and absorbed captivating lectures.

What's your favorite spot on campus?

The IT Office! I’ve spent so much time here and I have so many fun memories with my manager, supervisors and fellow student workers.

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

I need to keep myself busy all the time as I have a lot of energy. Whether it's diving into new hobbies, exploring new places or tackling exciting projects, I'm always on the lookout for my next adventure!

What is a piece of advice you have for incoming freshmen?

My dear future Seahawks, here's a little nugget of wisdom for you: Dream big! Your undergraduate years are a canvas waiting to be painted with all the colors of possibility. Stay focused on your goals, but don't forget to sprinkle in some fun along the way. Finding that sweet spot between work, school, and social life is key to making the most of your college experience. So go ahead, aim high, work hard, and enjoy the ride!
