The Wagner community is mourning an alumna who served the college on the Board of Trustees and as an athletics volunteer for many years.
Elsie (Schatz) Love ’50 M’61 died March 28, preceded by her husband Arthur E. Love Jr.’ 51. She was 97 years old.
An education student and basketball player at Wagner, Mrs. Love taught elementary, junior high, high school and college classes on Staten Island. She retired after 37 years.
Mrs. Love served on the Wagner Board of Trustees from 1975 to 1987 and was a founding member of the Seahawks Touchdown Club, holding its presidency for two years. she helped to organize 300 alumni and friends to travel to the Wagner football team’s 1987 national championship game in Arizona, and volunteered in the Athletics Department from 1988 to 1990.
She was presented the Alumni Service Award in 1971 and the Touchdown Club Appreciation Award in 1981. In 2002, she was inducted into the Wagner Hall of Fame.
“Elsie meant so much to the Wagner Touchdown Club and to this program,” said Walter Hameline, vice president for intercollegiate athletics and interim athletic director. “She cared deeply about Wagner and our student-athletes, and she was an incredible leader and person. I’m personally thankful for her many contributions and her dedication to Wagner College over the years. Her impact will never be forgotten.”
Her memorial services will be scheduled in Florida. Her family has suggested that donations be sent to the Wagner College Touchdown Club.
