Wagner College will welcome veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon Dr. Erika Gibson as its 2026 Black History Month Scholar for a special campus lecture on Thursday, February 12, at 6:00 p.m. in Spiro 2.
The lecture is part of Wagner’s ongoing Black History Month programming, which highlights the achievements, voices, and lived experiences of Black leaders across disciplines. Earlier this week, the College launched a series of Black History Month videos and stories spotlighting members of the Wagner community and their perspectives on identity, history, and impact. Dr. Gibson’s visit builds on that momentum, offering students and the broader community an opportunity to engage directly with a trailblazer in the sciences and healthcare.
Born and raised in New York, Dr. Gibson developed a passion for animals at a young age and dedicated her life to becoming a veterinarian. She earned her degree from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine before completing advanced training in neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital. In 2009, she became board-certified in veterinary neurology and has since worked in leading specialty hospitals across the United States and abroad, including in England and throughout the New York tri-state area. She currently serves as a veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon at Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster, New York.
Dr. Gibson’s lecture will explore her professional journey, the challenges and opportunities she has encountered in a highly specialized medical field, and the broader significance of representation and access in STEM and healthcare careers.Â
The event is free and open to the Wagner community. Students, faculty, staff, and guests are encouraged to attend and take part in this conversation honoring Black excellence and impact.
