Wagner College is once again making waves in the teaching field as it enters its second year with the Empire State Teacher Residency Program. This transformative initiative, launched in partnership with the New York State Department of Labor, provides aspiring educators with hands-on experience, financial support, and a direct pathway to a teaching career in New York City Public Schools (NYCPS).
The Empire State Teacher Residency Program offers graduate students a $30,000 stipend while they complete 1,000 hours of clinical teaching experience in NYCPS classrooms over one academic year. Designed to address teacher shortages and improve educational outcomes, the program pairs practical classroom experience with Wagner’s one-year 7-12 Adolescent Education and Students with Disabilities Residency graduate program.
Participants in the program must commit to teaching in NYC Public Schools for two years after completing their residency, ensuring long-term impact and sustainability in urban education.
“The goal is to address teacher shortages in meaningful and impactful ways,” said Katia González, Ed.D. “This program is about attracting qualified individuals ready to inspire the next generation while addressing critical needs in our public schools.”
Prospective candidates should complete two steps to be eligible for the stipend:
- Fill out the Empire State Teacher Residency Candidate Interest Survey by December 2, 2024.
- Apply to Wagner College by April 15, 2025, and select the one-year 7-12 Adolescent & Students with Disabilities education program with the residency option.
- Those who apply on or before December 15, 2024, receive priority consideration.
To qualify, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and cannot have previously participated in a teacher preparation program. Wagner offers additional residency and non-residency options for those not selected for the Empire program.
Wagner College’s Graduate Education Program goes beyond financial assistance, offering a comprehensive and supportive pathway to success. With a long-standing academic reputation, the program ensures a top-tier learning experience while providing students with hands-on training under the guidance of experienced mentors. The close-knit academic environment fosters community support, helping students thrive as they prepare for their teaching careers. Graduates also benefit from dual-teacher certification, earning credentials in both their chosen subject area and special education, equipping them to make an impact in the classroom.
