URINETOWN

Urinetown is a dystopian universe in which people need to pay to pee.  Caldwell B. Cladwell has made his fortune exploiting the poor with his Urine Good Company.  The cast is divided into The Rich and The Poor and The In Between.  (These designations are mine not those of the authors.)

The score for the musical is a pastiche of many different musical styles:  Kurt Weill, gospel, classic showtunes, folk, jazz and even operetta.  All cast members should have excellent musical versatility and understand how to produce vocal sound that appropriately matches style.  Bring in 16 bars of a contemporary musical theatre song that shows your range and your ability to create character.  Auditions will be conducted live via Zoom on Dec. 12.  Please use piano track for accompaniment.  Steer away from karaoke style tracks.

THE POOR–Penelope Pennywise–the overbearing authority who runs Public Amenity #1.  Needs a belt-ish high G and a legit high C.

Bobby Strong–the hero of the poor who starts a revolution and falls in love with Hope.  Tenor with a great sustained high A flat.  Ability to improvise up to high C.

Josephine Strong–Bobby’s mother. Character type. Mezzo-ish.

Old Man Strong/Hot Blades Harry–Bobby’s father, gets taken off to jail for illegally peeing and then doubles as Hot Blades Harry one of the renegade revolutionaries who is a psychopath with a propensity to violence.  Tenor.

Bobby the Stockfish/UGC Executive–one of the renegade revolutionaries who doubles as a UGC Executive.  Bari-tenor.

Tiny Tom/Dr. Billeaux—one of the renegade revolutionaries who is a simpleton and immature; also doubles as Dr. Bileaux, the yes-man scientist for Caldwell B. Cladwell.  Baritone.

Little Becky Two Shoes/Mrs. Millenium–one of the renegade revolutionaries with a foul mouth and poor impulse control; doubles as Mrs. Millenium.  Belter.

Billy Boy Bill/UGC Exec. 2–one of the renegade revolutionaries who doubles as UGC Exec. 2

Soupy Sue/Cladwell’s Secretary–one of the renegade revolutionaries who is excitable and easily panicked; doubles as Cladwell’s Secretary.  Mezzo

THE RICH

Caldwell B. Cladwell–greedy owner of the Urine Good Company.  Sleazy businessman.  Baritone.

Mr. McQueen–one of Cladwell’s yes men in the company.  Baritone.

Senator Fipp–corrupt politician in Cladwell’s pocket.  Baritone.

Hope Cladwell–Mr. Cladwell’s beautiful daughter who sets aside her privilege to start a revolution.  Soprano with a good mix.

THE IN BETWEEN

Officer Lockstock–the narrator for the show and the police chief.  Dry wit.  Tongue in cheek humor.  Baritone.

Officer Barrel–Lockstock’s sidekick.  An overly aggressive policeman.  Bari-tenor.

Little Sally–really a member of the poor.  A street urchin who engages in inquisitive conversation with Officer Lockstock.  Mezzo.

Celebration- An avant-garde “theatrical experiment” chronicling the struggle between love and ambition, youth and old age, innocence and corruption.

On a magical New Year’s Eve our mischievous narrator, Potempkin, takes us to a ritual played out with masks and torches to see what the winter night will bring. A young Orphan stumbles into the home of the richest man in the world with the goal of convincing him to save the orphanage. Mr. Rich declares that if the orphan can help him feel emotion once again, the orphanage will be restored. With the Orphan’s help, the jaded Mr. Rich regains his humanity, only to find himself locked in a ritualistic battle with the youth for a fallen angel’s love.

Inspired by the work of artists such as Peter Brooke, Ariane Mushkin, and Jaques Lecoq, this production will be less “realistic” and lean into the “theatrical.” Seeking bold, fearless, and unapologetic performers willing to collaborate, experiment, and play with different theatrical forms.

Characters

Angel – An ideal of youth and beauty, she desperately wants to be somebody in the world and is willing to do whatever she has to do to be that. Unintentionally falls in love with Orphan despite how little they can give her materially. Mezzo-Soprano with a strong belt and comfortable exploring the art of Burlesque. Strong mover

Orphan– An idealist and the epitome of youth, naiveté, and promise. Orphan falls in love with Angel and wants to get their beautiful garden back. Considering performers of all genders.

Potempkin – The narrator of our story. They are wise to the ways of the world, lives by a code of survival of the fittest, and tries to convince Orphan that they, too, must adopt this theory to survive. Considering performers of all genders.

Mr. Rich – Cold, greedy, and old. He wants everything Orphan stands for but destroys the meaning of such things in his pursuit of them. Baritone

The Revelers – Our eclectic ensemble of storytellers. Looking for artists with special skills including but not limited to musicians, magicians, mimes, maskers, acrobats, clowns, tappers, modern dancers, pole dancers, ribbon dancers, drag artists, contortionists, stage combat abilities, etc.

Edges is a song-cycle about four burgeoning adults asking classic coming-of-age questions. This charming, witty, and honest examination of adulthood explores what happens when we are teetering on the edges of our lives. The songs cover such universal issues as love, commitment, identity, and meaning. Characters deal with confronting emotions, escaping expectations, and deciphering complicated relationships.
