MATT LENZ

Class of 1986

MATT LENZ is an award-winning, New York based director who has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway and in theatres all over the world. Most recently, Matt directed Pageant: The Musical (2014 Drama Desk nomination for Best Revival of a Musical) and the hit comedy The Irish Curse.  Other New York credits include: IDAHO!  for New York Musical Theatre Festival (winner “Best Director” and “Best Show of Fest” Awards 2008), Susie Mosher’s The Great Daisy Theory, Fingers and Toes at NYMF, the Off-Broadway premiere of Alan Ball’s The Amazing Adventures of Tense Guy, and Wicked's 5th Anniversary Celebration: The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway.

Matt directed the first national tours of Cheers Live on Stage, A Christmas Story: The Musical, Catch Me If You Can and he has worked at many of the country’s finest regional theaters including Papermill Playhouse, George Street Playhouse, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse, and The MUNY, among many others.

Matt served as the Associate Director on original Broadway productions of Hairspray (and subsequent tours and international productions including UK, Germany and South Africa), Catch Me If You Can,  The Velocity of Autumn, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. He regularly teaches master classes and workshops in NYC and around the country at universities and for performing arts organizations. He received the 2010 Kevin Kline Award for Best Director, is a teaching artist for the Broadway Dreams Foundation and a Member of SDC.
